Do I need sunglasses?
…or is it really just a fashion statement? Obviously, wearing sunglasses in a low-lit club is a bit of a pose. But the general answer is yes, you should wear sunglasses in bright sunlight to protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) rays.
There are two types of UV ray that reach the Earth from the Sun, called UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and eye damage. UVA rays are largely absorbed by the lens in the eye, and the effects of UVA rays on the eye are still being researched. Look for sunglasses that block at least 60% of UVA and 70% of UVB rays. For the best protection, though, it’s easily possible to find sunglasses that block 98% or even 100% of both types of ray.
